'Hafu'/Half Japanese
For my very first post, I would like to introduce the “Hafu project”, not just because it raises an modern issue in the age of globalization, but also because of my personal background.
I was born between an American mother and a Japanese father.
I grew up in both countries.
I struggled throughout my whole life living between two cultures - not having a real home, not really sure about my true identity.
Apparently, that confusion was not only to myself. Many mixed-race people, especially in the Japanese society, find it difficult to have a sense of “fitting in”.
The Hafu project is about creating a dialogue about being in-between cultures.
The Hafu project not only organize events to raise awareness to this topic: It currently holds a photography exhibit of portraits of numerous half Japanese people, and also in production of a documentary film.
I recommend you reading the “Background” section, where you can find surprising facts and research insights about how half Japanese people are treated in Japan. If you grew up in a melting pot like the U.S., you might find it a bit odd.
